Junior
The juniors of Deben Rowing Club are a committed group of teenagers (male and female) aged between 14 and 18. We train all year round whatever the weather, and race enthusiastically as circumstances allow.
Our coaching team is a very experienced bunch of grown-up kids-at-heart who delight in passing on a love for their enduring passion.
The club is in a glorious location providing a variety of conditions from sublime to ‘challenging’, allowing us to get the edge on our inland river rivals who think ‘wind against tide’ is probably a form of stomach complaint.
The club has a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere – exemplified by the junior squad. Once you are all signed up, there are no such things as compulsory training sessions or selection assessment tests. You just turn up when you feel ready for the challenge, and train at a level you enjoy. The club will provide you with all the equipment and tuition you require to get started.
Of course, school and family life might get in the way of your future sculling career, so it’s important to know when we train to avoid immediate disappointment:
Tuesday evenings, all year round: 18:00-19:00 for joyful and fairly sweaty land training; or in the summer when circumstances allow longer sessions on the water from 17:30-19:30.
Saturday mornings, all year round: 10:30am-12:30pm on the water unless the Gods of wind, rain, river and tide are against us (which sadly they can often be, in which case we have almost as much fun on land).
It doesn't matter whether you are a complete beginner or have sculled before. Simply get in touch, and we'll give you a flavour of ‘what it’s all about’.
One option would be to drift along the river wall one Saturday morning at around 10:30am, and say hello. More reliable though might be to contact our Junior Co-ordinator on the following email: junior-coord@debenrowingclub.com
